Frequently Questions about Dry Bags

What do you use a dry bag for?

To keep clean kit dry and shielded from elements like dust, mud, sand, and water, use dry bags. They can also be used to store filthy, odorous clothes within a bigger backpack or duffel bag, keeping them apart from the clean gear. Dry bags are available in a wide range of sizes, shapes, and waterproofness levels (more on this later). All water sports, including diving, boating, stand-up paddle boarding, and kayaking, are excellent fits for them. You even get special dry bags for swimming in open water and for protecting your phone, so you can bring everything you need with you and leave nothing behind.

Are dry bags waterproof?

Indeed, however the degree of waterproofness varies. IP ratings (Ingres Protection ratings) are what these are called. All of our bags are completely waterproof; simply pay attention to the reviews on each product page. They describe the ideal uses for the waterproof bag. To make sure the zip-lock seals are watertight, don't forget to pinch them all the way to the ends!

Watershed makes duffels and backpacks that are unquestionably waterproof. They can tolerate some severe mistreatment and are made for white water rafting. Up to 300 feet (91 meters) of depth are acceptable for the zip-lock seal to sustain. Even though they are more expensive, we heartily endorse them.

How long do dry bags last?

Dry bags will typically provide you with several years of protection. The heavier materials can definitely tolerate being pulled through mud, over rocks, and into underbrush. Over time, the DWR (Durable Waterproof Repellant) coating on the lighter weight waterproof stuff sacks may wear off. Our products and similar products can be used in its place. As these bags get older, it makes sense to cycle them so that less important items, such soiled socks, are carried in them.

No matter where you purchase one of their products, all you have to do is register it on their website, and they will replace it for free. Wear and tear is obviously not covered.

What is a dry bag used for?

Your kit is shielded from the weather with a dry bag—it keeps out water, mud, dust, etc. They are frequently constructed from PVC tarpaulin, and to guarantee that there are no leaks, radio frequency welding is used at every joint. They zip-lock or use a roll top and buckle to seal.

Dry bags are useful in a variety of water activity settings, the marine industry, and off-the-beaten-path exploration when safeguarding your equipment is crucial.  When traveling in humid locations and wanting to keep your clothes dry and fresh, dry bags are a terrific option. Divide the contents of larger duffel bags and backpacks into smaller, waterproof stuff sacks. One for underwear, another for t-shirts, and a third for a wet swimming suit. A few of these bags even feature windows to facilitate easy identification of their contents.

Do dry bags float?

Yes, dry bags will usually float in general. They float because of their capacity to hold enough air inside of them to push out the water. Even while they will initially float, some dry bags—like Exped's incredibly light Cloudburst 25—are not meant to be submerged and may allow water to enter through the densely woven material. There will be no issues with any of the PVC tarpaulin-made bags floating. It's also important to remember that if you use a waterproof phone case in deep or murky water, you must affix it to something buoyant because the case doesn't retain enough air with the phone.

Can you submerge a dry bag?

Indeed, 99% of the dry bags we provide for sale are waterproof. Keep an eye out for anything certified IP66 and higher. This indicates that a brief submersion won't cause the waterproof bags to leak. Before fastening with the buckle, make sure you roll the tops down firmly three or four times. An extended submersion will allow a tiny trickle of water to enter. IP68 bags are completely waterproof and rated for an hour at a depth of up to six meters. This includes the Watershed backpacks and duffels and the OverBoard phone cases. The latter are actually rated to a bone-crushing depth of 300 feet, or 91 meters, though we'll be honest—we haven't tested them to that depth!

Look at the Pro-Sport line if you want to add a water bladder in addition to a ton of other features and lighter material.

What are dry bags made of?

Dry Bags come in two major fabrics; PVC tarpaulin or PU coated Taffeta nylon. Compared to Taffeta nylon, PVC tarpaulin is more durable and heavier in weight. Radiofrequency welding is typically used to fuse the seams together, essentially creating a single, leak-proof piece of material for the bag. Dry tubes, duffel bags, and waterproof backpacks are the typical uses for this material. PU coated Taffeta nylon, which is lighter in weight, is typically utilized to create smaller stuff sacks and watertight compression dry bags. Water beads up and rolls off the textile thanks to the PU coating, which is referred to as a DWR (Durable Waterproof Repellent) coating. But, it eventually wears off and can be replaced with goods like NicWax. Taffeta nylon is a woven fabric, thus it contains minuscule holes. These bags will protect from rain and poor weather, but are not submersible.
